TEDxIslay - Linda Bove: Why We Need Deaf Actors in Deaf Roles
Umm just one problem… Where’s the captions? Why do at least 4 of the 2010 TEDxIslay talks have NO captions?
Appropriately enough, this talk was given in the session as another talk about reaching out to the global Deaf community. Well guess what - the d/Deaf world doesn’t revolve around ASL. For serious.
I definitely agree that this needs to be captioned.
I would like to drop in my 2 cents, if I may. The Deaf World doesn’t revolve around ASL, but it does revolve around signed languages. Linda Bove is clearly “D” Deaf, and ASL is her primary language. (I have a tremendous amount of respect for Linda Bove. She has done quite a lot in her life time, and I rather idolize her). This video does have the voice of an interpreter (for the hearing) in the background (though I can’t comment on how clear it is). That being said, at least there is access in that realm.
It is unfortunate that “d” deaf are going to be the ones who have a hard time understanding this video, particularly if they’re interested in becoming “D” Deaf. If it did have captions though, the world doesn’t revolve around English any more than it does ASL. Sure, a wide population may ‘know’ English, but that doesn’t mean they would be able to read and understand all the concepts and vocabulary in the video.
Is there a way to message the person or site that posted them and ask them to caption it? I mean, after all, you’re looking at a group of people that strongly supports captioning.
((Also, before anyone says it, I tried the ‘transcribe audio’ option…. it was… just… really really bad. So that’s a no go.))
But I’m going to message the channel that posted it and see if they will add captions to the videos that don’t already have them. c:
***Edit: Tried to message uploaded, but there was no message button on their channel page, so I left a comment instead. I encourage everyone else to do the same! Smile!***
